THE TORRANCE HISTORY

Torrance Hotel has a rich history. It was originally built as a cotton-spinning mill and workers houses and was the very first manufacturing enterprise in the village of East Kilbride. In 1792, the machinery was moved to a new building and Torrance Square became the hotel and the mill buildings became homes. When the Village School was rebuilt in 1880, the children were accommodated in the upper part of the hotel.

Built in 1773 by General Stuart of Torrance as a cotton-spinning mill and workers' houses the building in Torrance Square provided a focus for town life. In its many incarnations the popular Torrance Hotel has also housed a school, a shop and a Coaching Inn, but it has always been at the heart of East Kilbride. The building has retainained all its original character and charm. We have 20 comfortable bedrooms including the newly refurbished Honeymoon Suite for 2007. Enjoy a meal in our warm and friendly restaurant or lounge bar which caters for a wide range of food from traditional meals to bar snacks. We are a 5 minute walk from the local train station which will take you straight into Glasgow's Central Station which runs every half hour. If more information is required then do not hesitate to ask our friendly receptionist staff. We would like to advise guests that there will be no bar or restaurant facilities for the next 4 months. We are undergoing a major refurbishment to improve the services to the guests in the future.

TORRANCE HOTEL SOLD TO LOCAL BUSINESSMAN

EAST Kilbride’s Torrance Hotel has been sold to a Thorntonhall businessman.
Manorview Hotels Ltd, who owns two other hotels and has shares in bars and nightclubs, has recently added the 227-year-old building to its portfolio after purchasing it from multi-millionaire businessman Willie Haughey.

The takeover also puts an end to speculation the hotel could be demolished and flats built in its place as the new owner is adamant it will remain a hotel. Among other properties owned by Manorview Hotels Ltd are The Commercial Hotel in Wishaw and the luxury Lynnhurst Hotel in Johnstone. Manorview Hotels Ltd took over the reins at the Torrance Hotel last week and told the News all existing staff would be retained. He may even hire more once a major refurbishment is completed. A Manorview Hotels Ltd spokesman told the News this week: “we took it over just last Tuesday so it is early days but we have big plans for the place and architects are already at work to redesign the interior. “The name will be staying the same as it has been that way for so long. We will also be retaining the old stone look and just modernising the inside of the building. “We will remain open until around Christmas time when we will start to close parts for refurbishment.” In March of this year, confidential plans sent out in error by South Lanarkshire Council’s planning department showed that speculative plans had been submitted to demolish the historic building. However, the spokesman claims it won’t be happening. He added: “To demolish the hotel is absolutely not our intention “We are a hotel company and will simply be increasing what is already there.”
